Here’s the latest newsletter from the Listening Experience Database project.

LED1 conference proceedings
Preparation of the proceedings of last year’s conference ‘Listening to music: people, practices and experiences’ continues to progress well. The chapters are now with a copy editor, and we are aiming for publication in a freely accessible online format around Easter 2017.

LED2 conference
The second project conference is planned for 2017/18, and we’ll have more information for you in the New Year.

Technical update
As we have discovered, the terms used to describe a listening experience tend to change or evolve over time, so it can sometimes be difficult to know which are the best terms to use when searching a new data set. Our colleagues in KMi have extracted the top keywords from the current LED entries, with a view to helping us use these terms to explore other data sets. Further work is needed to clean this data, but we will be posting something on the website once it is in a more user-friendly format.

Entries
We currently have 9,683 entries in the database with just short of 1,500 waiting to be approved. Once the remaining inputters have finished working on their sources we should exceed our initial target of 10,000 entries.

We have also assessed the current entries in LED for gaps in our coverage. Perhaps not surprisingly the majority of entries are from 19th and 20th century sources, and our most pressing need is for earlier sources, particularly British ones. So if you can help us to fill these gaps, please feel free to enter any such material, or get in touch with us to suggest sources that we might want to consider.

Publicity, networking and outputs
Two project team members have had papers accepted at forthcoming conferences.

Helen is giving a paper at the conference A ‘Great Divide’ or a Longer Nineteenth Century? Music, Britain and the First World War, at Durham University on 21 January 2017. The title of her paper is ‘‘‘A Vital Necessity”: World War I Nurses and their Experiences of Music’. Further details at https://www.dur.ac.uk/cncs/conferences/musicbritainww1/

Martin is giving a paper entitled ‘Ordinary Theology and Church Music: Listening and Learning’ at the York Conference on Church Music, 13-15 February. Further details at http://yccm2017.webs.com/
